Biggleswade mayor Councillor Tim Woodward is looking forward to representing the town’s interests at Central Beds Council.
Conservative candidate Mr Woodward won the Biggleswade South seat at the by-election on Thursday, November 15 beating second place Labour candidate Sheila Grayston by 119 votes. Mr Woodward gained 642 votes, Mrs Grayston 523 and third place independent candidate Jonathan Medlock won 437 votes.
Liberal Democrat candidate Gee Leach was fourth with 73 votes.
Mr Woodward said he is looking forward to taking Biggleswade issues to the floor at Central Beds Council meetings.
He said: “Previously I have had to pass matters out of the town council’s remit on, but now I will be able to take them to Central Beds myself.”
Mrs Grayston said: “I was disappointed not to win the seat. My campaign team had worked so hard and the response on the doorstep was good.”
Conservative candidate Michael North won the Biggleswade Holme Ward seat on Biggleswade Town Council with 146 votes.
Independent candidate Jonathan Medlock was second with 130 votes and Labour candidate Mike Smith third with 121 votes.
Mr North won after being narrowly defeated when he stood for the Biggleswade Ivel seat in the last town council elections.
Independent candidate Alison Graham won the Silsoe and Shillington seat on Central Beds Council.
She won 527 votes, followed by second place Conservative candidate Martin Hawkins with 236 votes, UKIP’s Steven Wildman with 73 votes, Liberal Democrat candidate Janet Nunn with 66 votes and the Green Party’s Gareth Ellis with 56 votes. Mrs Graham stood as an independent after leaving the Liberal Democrats earlier this year.
The Central Beds and town council elections for Biggleswade were held following the tragic death of the late Councillor Peter Vickers in August.
The Silsoe and Shillington by-election was held after former ward Councillor Iain McKilligan resigned his seat.
