Generous readers can spread seasonal cheer

Nobody should have a miserable Christmas – and that’s why we are giving you the chance to spread some festive cheer.

The Biggleswade Chronicle’s Families in Need Appeal for 2012 was launched in Sandy Library on Saturday (November 3).

This is the 30th year that the Chronicle has run the appeal.

Every year kind-hearted readers donate food and gifts, which are given to the poorest families in this area. This way everyone gets to have a pleasant time at Christmas.

Community stalwart and Sandy town councillor, Ken Lynch, has organised the appeal for the last three decades. This will be his final year. His wife, Audrey, was the appeal’s administrator for 25 years.

This year, in celebration of the Jubilee, the hampers will be luxury hampers.

Ken would like to see items such as tins of fruit, nuts, tinned ham, Christmas puddings, mince pies, boxes of chocolates, sweets, biscuits and Christmas crackers donated.

Nice toiletries and new toys will also be welcomed.

Once again the appeal is being run in conjunction with Kings Baptist Church in Stotfold’s The Need Project.

This project collects food for the needy all year round and is doing an excellent job. They will continue to provide basic foodstuffs over the Christmas period while Chronicle readers give a few treats.

The Need Project will deliver our luxury hampers to the needy in time for Christmas. They receive the names from social workers and other official organisations and these are kept strictly confidential.

This is your chance to step up and help others in your community.

Donations can be taken to the Chronicle offices in Biggleswade High Street from 9am to 5pm on weekdays until Friday, December 14.

They can also be taken directly to Ken at 4 Pyms Way in Sandy.

Additionally, Sandy Town Council has a collection point for all goods – luxury and basic – in the Cambridge Road offices.
