Improved access to Biggleswade Railway Station is at least four years away.
This week train company Govia, which runs the Peterborough to Kings Cross line, announced improvements to its trains that would help wheelchair users.
But when the Chronicle asked about the lack of access to the platforms at Biggleswade station – which can only be reached by stair – Govia said the next opportunity to bid for Government Access for All funding was likely to be in late 2018 for funding from April 2019.
In April, train companies were invited to bid for a share of £100m funding, and prioritised on the basis of annual footfall and the distance from the nearest station with step free access.
A total of 42 stations received cash.
A spokesman for Govia Great Northern said: “We appreciate how difficult it can be for disabled passengers and others with impaired mobility including the elderly, parents with buggies and people with heavy luggage to access the rail network at stations where there is no level access.
“In the meantime we want to make sure that all passengers enjoy their journey with us, including those with special needs. We run an assisted travel scheme for passengers with disabilities and older people who need a little extra help in using our services.”
