RSPB giving rare farmland wildlife a chance to prosper

Scarce farmland wildlife are being given a home thanks to the RSPB in Sandy.

They are managing fields owned by Lafarge Tarmac on Sandy Heath to create the new home.

This work will hopefully benefit the plight of the turtle dove, which is a species currently halving in number every six years.

The Eastern region is a stronghold for vulnerable turtle dove populations in the UK, and home to over 60 percent of the summer breeding population.

The RSPB has sown wildlife friendly crops on the fields, which are situated between The Lodge nature reserve and Sandy Heath quarry.

Peter Bradley, Senior Site Manager said: “The fields on Sandy Heath already have good populations of skylarks and with careful management and sowing, we hope to attract other scarce and declining farmland birds such as corn bunting, tree sparrow, yellowhammer, grey partridge and hopefully even the endangered turtle dove.

“Now that the first crops are mature, the farmland looks amazing, with plenty of flowers attracting bees and butterflies. We now look forward to seeing some large flocks of birds feeding here over the autumn and winter.”

Niki Williamson, RSPB Senior Conservation Officer, added: “Without our help, farm wildlife struggles to find the resources it needs in the wider countryside.”
