Shefford Town and Campton FC play their first game at the newly developed Shefford Sports Club tomorrow.
The 11-acre £1.3 million development, on Hitchin Road, is managed by Shefford Sports Club, a committee formed by the adult football club, Shefford Saints Juniors and other users.
The clubhouse was completed just over a year ago and was officially opened by Sir Trevor Brooking and former Shefford Saints player Jack Collison last November.
It has been a huge success with the clubhouse booked most weekends for both sports and social functions.
The development was competed following seven years of negotiation, and provides a main adult size pitch, five juniors pitches to be used by Shefford Saints, four changing rooms, officials changing rooms and the main clubroom with a fully equipped bar and kitchen.
The venue was used for the Dean Johnson Memorial game on Friday, August 22 and a club fundraising friendly the following Sunday, but tomorrow is the first competitive game to be played.
Shefford Town and Campton has three teams playing in the Bedfordshire County League.
The new ground has been funded by money received following the redevelopment of the former football ground in Ivel Road, Football Foundation grants and Nigel Lewis of Warden Development, the club’s landlord.
He has substantially funded the land purchase and infrastructure required for the development and is the club’s main sponsor.
Graham Earl, who managed the development for the club, said: “After the years of hard work that has been put in by many people, it will be fantastic to see the teams run out and play the first game.
“Everyone involved will be very proud of what will mark the start of a new era for Shefford Town and Campton FC. We wish the teams all the best for the coming season”.
The first team play their first home game against Flitwick Town at 2.30pm tomorrow.
The club are ready to welcome supporters old and new. Entry is free with refreshments available and the bar will be open.
