A burglar who smashed a bottle of wine over a victim’s head before stabbing him in the face has been jailed for 13 and a half years.

Jesse Smith, 33, of High Street, Biggleswade, appeared before Luton Crown Court on Friday for sentencing having pleaded guilty to burglary, GBH and common assault on July 21.

The incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday, February 26 when the victim and his partner were awoken by the sound of someone trying to break into their home in Grange Road, Blunham.

The victim confronted the two offenders who demanded cash before Smith hit him over the head with an empty wine bottle, which smashed.

Smith then used the broken bottle to attack the victim leaving him with serious injuries to his face and neck.

As Smith and his accomplice tried to flee the property with a small amount of cash, he got his foot caught in a closing door and the victim was able to strike him several times with a torch which caused injury to his face.

Smith finally managed to escape in a waiting car but when police officers attended the scene they found traces of Smith’s DNA at the location.

Smith was quickly arrested and charged with burglary, GBH and common assault.

He pleaded guilty to all of the offences last month.

Detective Constable Claire Case, who investigated the incident, said: “This was a terrifying ordeal which left the victim with very serious injuries to his face and neck but he showed extreme bravery in fighting off his attackers and raising the alarm.

“Thanks to his actions we were able to collect DNA evidence which was crucial in securing this sentence and ensuring that Smith cannot cause any more fear or harm for a very long time.”
