Young scientists have been investigating the plants and minibeasts which live in Maulden Woods as part of their Woodland Highlights project.

Funded by a Royal Society Partnership Grant, the Southill Lower School pupils visited the woods back in March and recorded all the interesting plants and minibeasts they found.

In June they returned and compared their findings. Using their new data loggers they recorded the temperature and light levels under different tree species.

Colin Carpenter from The Community Tree Trust was on hand to help with the identification of the woodland flora and fauna.

Clare Warren, science subject leader at the school said: “The children have learned so much about woodland as a habitat. They have worked like real scientists using data loggers to measure soil temperature and light levels and quadrats to focus their attention on a small area.”

The children will now study the data and present their results to Colin when he visits the school.
