An upper school has been praised for its rapid progress.

The report from Sandy Upper School’s Ofsted inspection at the end of March has just been released. It was the third inspection since the school fell into special measures last February.

The report says: “By setting highly ambitious target grades across all subjects the expectations of students and teachers have been raised in one fell swoop.

“Any scepticism about the unreality of such high aspirations has been erased by the sharp upturn in students’ progress and the remarkable outcomes in the November GCSE examinations.

“This improvement is already making up for previous deficits.”

More effective teaching and better use of assessments have led to the sudden improvements.

Students have a positive attitude and have “embraced the new ‘can do’ culture.”

The report adds: “Senior leaders, including governors, are set to be commended not only for the dramatic improvements in teaching and achievement but also the way they have handled the setbacks caused by the collapse of the sponsor arrangements.”

Marking could still be improved at times.
