Chronicle Country brownies are to celebrate the movement’s centenary with a series of special events.

The Girlguiding Biggleswade District will be marking the milestone with special activities arranged for brownies aged from seven to 11 from all over the area.

Amanda Barker, district commissioner for the Girlguiding Biggleswade District said: “Our district is the biggest in our division and we have units in Langford, Biggleswade, Northill and Upper Caldecote.

“Brownies from all of these units will be joining us for the special events and celebrations.”

The first, the Brownie Boogie will take place on Friday, March 14 and will see youngsters from all of the units enjoying a fun disco.

Then on Saturday, March 15 there will be a brownie recruitment drive in Biggleswade market square.

Visitors to the Saturday market can find out more about the units and how youngsters can join.

In May there will also be a celebratory day of activities at the Boyd Memorial Campsite and Activity Centre in Henlow, and in June girls from all of the units can take part in a giant sleepover on the theme ‘then and now.’

Brownies were first organized by Lord Baden-Powell in 1914, to complete the range of age groups for girls in scouting.

Today they hold regular meetings and learn new hobbies, play music, explore other cultures and enjoy outdoor adventures. See www.girl
