Old clothes help firefighters

The fire service is asking people to donate their old clothes.

The garments will be used to raise funds for The Fire Fighters Charity.

Unwanted clothes can be dropped off at any fire station in Bedfordshire but Sandy, Potton, Biggleswade and Shefford fire stations all have special yellow collection banks to make it easier.

Shoes and handbags can also be donated.

Wearable items will be sent to developing countries to help those who are experiencing extreme poverty and the un-wearable items will be recycled into other day-to-day products such as industry rag, car insulation and furniture padding.

For every tonne gathered the charity, which helps get injured firefighters fit and back to work again, will receive £220.

The scheme started in 2009 and the fire station in Bedford has finished as a runner up in the race to raise funds for the last two years.
