Extra shops for Biggleswade’s retail park

Extra shops have been added to the design for a revamped retail park.

The plans for the new look London Road Retail Park in Biggleswade are still being finalised and the latest version has been submitted to Central Beds Council for approval.

Homebase, which is sited alone at the southern end of the retail park, will be staying in its current location. But the previous plan showed it with the new Unit P attached to its side.

Now the applicant, LXB Retail Park (Biggleswade), has removed Unit P from the plans entirely, leaving Homebase as it is. Additional parking spaces were due to be created when Unit P was built but these will no longer materialise with the reversion to the existing scheme.

Unit G, which will be located approximately where Laura Ashley is at present, will be split into two to form Units G1 and G2.

One shop, known as Unit E, will be reinstated in the plan, approximately where Pets at Home is at present. This will again reduce the amount of space available for cars.

The overall number of parking spaces will go down from 825 to 795.

Comments about the revision to the retail park plan can be made online at http://bit.ly/1akMR7M until Thursday, February 6.

It is expected that there will be a decision in March.

LXB’s plans to redevelop Biggleswade’s retail park were first announced in summer 2011. Marks and Spencer and Next have said they will open stores in the development.

The retail park’s upgrade will also necessitate a short section of additional dual carriageway on London Road and major changes to the Biggleswade south roundabout on the A1.
