Major roadworks due to last for six months

Drivers could face months of roadworks on a major Chronicle Country roundabout.

The current Biggleswade south roundabout, which links London Road with the A1, is to become a ‘long-about’ as part of a £3.5m project by Central Beds Council and the Highways Agency.

The project will take around six months – but developers plan to carry out part of the work during the night.

It aims to provide more capacity for extra traffic generated by new homes being built in the area, as well as the needs of businesses, including those at the revamped London Road Retail Park.

Contractors Balfour Beatty are expected to take on the work, which will start on January 20 and last for around six months.

Paul Fraser, project management consultant at consultants EC Harris, explained that the work will be completed in five phases and will be done partly at night and partly during the day, with the first phase taking place at night.”

The final phase is expected to start at the end of May and end on or around July 18.

Councillor Brian Spurr at Central Beds Council said: “Clearly the A1 is a very busy strategic route and it is essential that we keep the traffic moving.

“We will need to narrow the lanes on the A1 and occasionally close a lane but the lane closures will be done at night whenever possible.”

Diversions will also be in place, though these will not direct traffic towards the town centre unless there is no alternative.

Mr Spurr added: “We are well aware that roadworks cause disruption and we will do everything we can to minimise this. We believe the changes will support and encourage job and housing growth in the area.”
