Town and parish councils will have less money to spend next year.
Central Beds Council has confirmed that it will not pass on money from the Council Tax Support Grant in the next financial year.
The council, which has been vocal about not increasing its part of the council tax precept for the last three years, has said it needs the money for its own services.
Opposition councillors proposed that the council continues to share money the Government’s Council Tax Support Grant with town and parish councils – but this was voted down.
Councillor Nigel Aldis of Sandy and Councillor Adam Zerny of Potton were keen to see the money shared.
In a record voted all the Independent, Lib Dem and Labour councillors voted in favour of the money being passed to parishes and all the Conservative councillors voted against it.
The final budget will be agreed in February. Mr Zerny said: “I will continue my fight to have this money passed to the parishes. It is rightfully theirs.”
Councillor Maurice Jones, executive member for corporate resources at Central Beds Council, said: “The reality is that at the same time as seeing a significant reduction in our funding we are also experiencing an increase in demand for costly but vital support services for vulnerable adults and children.
“We appreciate that town and parish councils would prefer us to lessen the negative effects of the changes to council tax but we have to weigh up that desire against the range of pressures we face to meet the increasing demand for our services with less money.”
