Appeal to BT over phone line charge blunder

A woman has appealed to BT to stop charging her 95-year-old grandmother for a phone line she doesn’t have.

Michelle Littlechild says the company has continued to charge Eunice Ellis a monthly fee, even though she has not used a BT line for six months.

Eunice was previously a resident at Allison House Residential Home in Sandy where she had a BT line installed in her room.

But in April she moved to Chase House care home in Arlesey, so Michelle called BT to stop the previous line and ask if a new one could be installed.

She said: “I rang them and they said that would be fine, they would stop the line and there would be no problem with transferring.

“But then on two separate occasions BT engineers turned up at Chase House to install the new line.

“Each time they spoke to the manager and then said they were leaving the site but would be back shortly to do the work. But they never came back.”

BT also continued to charge Eunice.

Michelle added: “They have been charging her every month, despite my phone calls to them to ask why. They have added insult to injury.”

A spokesman for BT said that the firm had mistakenly continued to charge Eunice.

He said: “We have taken measures to cancel the account completely and will credit a final £2 that is owed on the account.

“Once we have confirmed that we will also send a £25 payment as a goodwill gesture for the problems they have faced.”
