Travellers set up camp in the middle of a new housing development at the weekend.

A number of caravans arrived at the Kings Reach development in Biggleswade on Sunday (September 1), and settled next to the roundabout linking Chambers Way and Baden Powell Way.

Concerned residents contacted Central Beds Council and Beds Police following reports of antisocial behaviour.

One resident, who asked not to be named said: “People were afraid to take their dogs out for walks as there were reports that the travellers’ dogs has been attacking the residents’ ones as they were walking past.

“They settled very close to the new houses and people have been feeling quite uncomfortable about it.”

Another homeowner who lives close to where the travellers had set up camp said: “They have no right to set up base there and they have caused a lot of problems.

“There were reports that they had been seen going to the toilet in the bushes near the residential roads.

“The green spaces here are for the use of the residents and it’s not right that they feel they cannot use them.”

Staff at Martin Grant Homes later confirmed that the firm’s sales office in Chambers Way did not open on Wednesday (September 4) as bailiffs were due to visit and evict the travellers.

A spokesman for Taylor Wimpey confirmed that they were served a notice of eviction on Wednesday.

The travellers left the development that day and some of the caravans were later seen parked on land close to the London Road Retail Park.

A spokesman for Central Beds Council said the council could not take any action as Kings Reach is private land.

A Beds Police spokesman said that officers would sometimes assist with an eviction if this was necessary.
