A young apprentice has been given a top engineering award.

Sean Ives of Biggleswade was presented with the runner up electrical apprentice award after taking part in the Institute of Road Transport Engineers (IRTE) Skills Challenge.

The youngster represented bus company Arriva the Shires at the competition held in Bristol in May.

He attended an awards ceremony at Mercedes Benz World in Weybridge, Surrey to collect his award.

Sean is a fourth year Arriva Stevenage electrical apprentice and took part in the contest with teammates James Ward and Tom Hubbard.

Aimed at the technicians who repair and maintain the country’s buses, the competition sees teams from across the UK compete in a series of technical challenges.

The tests are designed to determine the best bus engineers in the business.

Brian Barraclough, regional engineering director of Arriva the Shires said: “We recognised some time ago that our engineers are the life blood of the company and with that thought in mind we set in place a number of initiatives to improve the training and development of our existing engineers and apprentices.”
