Dogs can share in the carnival spirit.

For the first time ever a dog show will form part of Sandy Carnival.

The carnival committee has arranged the event, which is being sponsored by Pets At Home, in conjunction with Sit and Stay Shows.

Dogs can compete on Sunday, June 9; the weekend before the main carnival procession.

The classes are puppy aged six to 12 months, junior aged 12 to 18 months, gundog, pastoral or working dog, hound or terrier, toy or utility, veteran aged seven years plus and an open contest. All varieties of dog can be entered.

There will also be plenty of fun classes. These are cutest puppy up to 12 months, best veteran aged seven years plus, prettiest bitch, handsomest dog, best crossbreed, best child handler aged six to 11, best child handler aged 12 to 16 and best adult handler, fancy dress and waggiest tail.

There will also be fun categories for best condition, best rescue, best trick, best brace, Irish brace, most appealing eyes and dog the judge would like to take home.

Best in show and best reserve in show prizes will be awarded.

Each class will cost £1 to enter. Go along to the Sunderland Road Recreation Ground to join the canine excitement. Registration opens at 10am and the classes are scheduled to begin at 11am.

In other news from Sandy Carnival, raffle tickets will be on sale throughout the town from the start of June. Prizes include £100 cash, a cordless drill and a meal for two at the Holiday Inn.

You could also win vouchers for local shops and businesses, a hamper, tools, sweets, chocolates, wine and a water feature.

Tickets cost 20p each or £1 for a strip. If you do not spot any on sale call carnival chair, Hayley Stewart, on 01767 223911.

The carnival will be held on Saturday, June 15. The procession will leave Western Way at 1.30pm and makes its way through the town, finishing at Sandye Place Academy half an hour later.

Activities in the school grounds will include stalls, archery, face painting, a fun fair and demonstrations by local groups.
