Busy road junction could be ‘made safer’

A new 20mph speed limit and parking restrictions could help to improve safety at a busy road junction.

Central Beds Council is considering introducing a 20mph speed limit in Hitchin Road, Shefford close to the junction with Clifton Road.

A zebra crossing could also be installed at the junction in Hitchin Road, while new rules stopping motorists from waiting at any time are being considered for Clifton Road.

The council’s traffic management committee has discussed the proposals.

Clifton Road and Hitchin Road are often used by students walking to and from Samuel Whitbread Academy

The initiative is being considered following concerns about the safety of pedestrians walking to and from the school and others nearby.

The mini roundabout that links Clifton Road and Hitchin Road could also be redesigned if the plans go ahead.

If implemented the scheme is expected to cost around £30,000, with part of the funding coming from section 106 money.

The plans were advertised through public notices earlier in the year and have been submitted to Shefford Town Council and the emergency services for consideration.

Bedfordshire Police has said it is not opposed to the proposals, but some residents in Clifton Road have objected, especially to plans for the new waiting time restrictions.

Home owners have said that yellow lines on the road would leave them with nowhere to park their cars as they do not have driveways.

There are also concerns that the new restrictions would increase parking in nearby Victoria Road, where spaces are already at a premium a lot of the time.

Objecting to the proposals, one resident said: “As you may be aware, parking for cottages that are on Clifton Road is next to none and the proposed, uncontrolled pedestrian crossing would be taking parking away from numbers 57, 59, 61, and 63 Clifton Road.”

Another objector wrote: “There is little or no off-road parking for the houses on the north side of your proposed restricted zone.

“The only other place people could be able to park is to the south in Victoria Road. There are already disagreements there between residents arguing over the few available spaces.”

Members of the traffic management committee will defer a decision on the waiting restrictions after receiving the objections.

A decision on the zebra crossing will also be delayed as the council favours installing it on platforms which will cost more to build. These costs will now be investigated.
