Schoolchildren carried out waste busting activities.

Pupils at Langford Lower School, Caldecote Lower School in Upper Caldecote and Edward Peake Middle School in Biggleswade all joined in with EDF Energy’s waste week.

The energy company teamed up with the British Science Association to encourage schools to take a more scientific approach to reducing waste.

Activities included becoming a waste scientist and using recyclable materials in experiments, carrying out waste audits and asking pupils, teachers and parents to make waste pledges.

Other activities such as rubbish free lunch days and litter picks were also undertaken by pupils.

Sue Hordijenko, director of programmes at the British Science Association, said: “Children love a challenge and that’s why thousands have been looking into the problems of waste and coming up with some brilliant solutions.

“That’s exactly the kind of approach we want from budding scientists and engineers and we are certainly going to need thousands of those in years to come in the energy industry and beyond.”
