The future looks bright for Biggleswade’s Christmas lights after the community agreed to work together to improve them in years to come.

At a meeting of Biggleswade Town Council’s off street car parking committee on Tuesday councillors and members of the public agreed that there is still room for improvement with the lights. Last year Biggleswade Town Council took responsibility for the lights from the Biggleswade Chamber of Trade and changed contractors.

The Lamps & Tubes firm was brought in to provide the lights on a three-year hire contract, replacing Jamie Harris, who with his family had been putting them up for more than 40 years.

Councillor David Albone said residents had missed the brightly-coloured festoons that were previously put up in the High Street.

Councillor George Wilson said: “The colours were rather bland – I think people were disappointed as they were so bright and colourful before.”

But committee chairman Councillor Madeline Russell said no major changes could be made until 2015 due to the three-year contract.

Chamber of Trade chairman Martin Thomas said: “It’s important that we act as positively as we can with the lights as we are still raising money and negativity doesn’t help. This is something we can all work together on in future.”
