Campaign to reverse traffic flow gets a boost

The campaign to reverse the flow of traffic in a road has been given a boost.

Biggleswade Town Council’s off street car parking committee has backed the petition to change the traffic order in Hitchin Street.

Currently vehicles can only travel away from the town centre along the one-way street, but shop owners in the road say this has an adverse effect on business.

They want traffic to travel into the town along the road so visitors will be more inclined to stop off and shop in the road.

On Tuesday, February 5 12 proprietors who run businesses in the road presented a petition to Central Beds Council’s traffic management committee.

The Central Beds committee could not accept the petition as the matter had not been considered by the town council.

But at a meeting on Tuesday (February 12) the town committee agreed to support the measure in principle.

Councillor Steve Watkins said: “I think we should act positively on this and help the town. This would really help the traders.”

Other councillors had doubts about the effect the extra traffic could have on the market square, especially on market days.

The proposal will now go to full council.
