A pensioner was removed from a doctor’s surgery in handcuffs after a row over her medical records.
Police were called to Biggleswade Health Centre on Thursday, December 20 after Mary Kerswell refused to leave.
Mrs Kerswell, 67, had called at the surgery to pick up a copy of the document after previous records wrongly stated that she had a series of serious medical conditions.
The retired scientist, of Grasmere Road, Biggleswade, said she was shocked when she found out that she was recorded as having Alzheimer’s and kidney disease.
The records also showed that she had undergone a double hip replacement and a hysterectomy, and was a heavy smoker.
She said: “I first found out when they rang to ask if I could go in for a urine test because of my kidney condition.
“I told them I had no such thing and asked if I could see a copy of my records.”
Mrs Kerswell paid a £10 fee so her records could be printed out, and after she pointed out the mistakes, the practice agreed to amend the records and provide her with a new copy.
But despite weeks of phone calls and visits she was only given a three-page report.
She added: “The full records are 43 pages in length so you can understand that I wanted to see the full document.”
Mrs Kerswell denies that she was loud or abusive.
She added: “There have been reports saying I was shouting and causing distress but all I did was sit quietly and peacefully in the waiting area after telling the reception staff that I was going to stay until they could give me a copy of the records.
“The next thing I knew the police had turned up and were handcuffing me and taking me out.”
An NHS Bedfordshire spokesman said: “The practice has written to Mrs Kerswell recently providing her with an up-to-date copy of her medical records and apologising for any inconsistencies and errors that may have occurred.
“It was unfortunate that when Mrs Kerswell visited the practice staff were unable to meet her request to provide a copy of her medical records in a specific format.
“They were happy to do so, but explained that it could not be done immediately and would take a little longer.”
She added: “The practice, working together with the local NHS Pals team, will be contacting Mrs Kerswell to discuss any concerns she may have over her medical records and recent events.”
A Bedfordshire Police spokesman confirmed that a 67-year-old woman had been removed from the surgery after a breach of the peace.
